Replacing Nature

Nature is what gave humans life. Throughout human history, life has expanded and people have traveled around the world. This growth however is not to the benefit of the natural world. The only things that have benefited are humans and they brought destruction to the things around them. These images capture the missing holes that are being created by the urbanization of humans. They depict the natural forests that are being lost or removed to expand the lives of humans and the ever-growing population. As the images progress more and more of the forest is being lost and replaced by large industrial-shaped white space.

Life has taught me that ignoring nature has detrimental consequences and should no longer be overlooked. I've seen forests being torn down and turned into towns or farms. They have lost all life to these areas and are now soulless. These images tell a story of how the world will look if people do not take more care of our natural forests. The forest is already something that is being protected out of fear of losing them. This is a call to action. Soon there will not be a natural landscape where animals can live and wild plants can flourish. Look at this as a reminder that it is not too late to make a change to the way humans live. There is still time to learn to live with nature and everything that comes with it.

As a continuation of this body of work, the images explore in greater depth the life that will be lost if humans continue on their path for betterment. The images show just how beautiful nature could be if one would just step outside their door and explore more of the world. It shows that the plants and landscapes are not the only life being affected but also the wild animals are too. The animals are losing their habitats., their homes. The Natural world is so crucial to the Earth's ecosystem. Without every living thing, our ecosystem would get out of balance. The world would change and these images show just how they would look if this happens.

I was inspired by the work of Wendell White. He has a body of work that is called “Schools for the Colored” it is an exploration into the history of African American school buildings that were created and known for being segregated. He shows this by covering the background of the building images that with a white tint. This gives the building emphasis and calls the individual to look at what the building is and why it is important. He explores the history of these buildings and how they remind the community of the separation between the different cultures. Though his work has different content it has similar methods of how it shows the content of the image as to my images. Both bodies of works use the silhouette of buildings to emphasize the effect these buildings have on their surrounding. White is all about racial issues and my images are about environmental issues. This is how White work inspired my own.
